December 2009
We went down to St. Paul early this month and I'm still working through some of the pictures. Here's Becky...she isn't really miserable, just surprised.

Did I blog this already? If not, why not? Nice picture of us at the Grand Marais light house last weekend...

October Nor'Easter 3
Celebrating my birthday with a quick trip to the north shore. We didn't realize the size of the storm we were experiencing until we saw some of the waves hitting the rocks. Very cool...There are a few more of these on flickr, just click the photo.

sunken-garden
Long exposure to soften the water splashing from the fountain. This is at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, in their sunken garden.

orange-drop-3
I finally decided to try my hand at classic water drop photos. I have some work to do yet, but I'm fairly pleased with my first attempts.

Hawk on a Hay Bale
Driving home on Saturday afternoon, this hawk was watching out for mice or whatever on this round bale. He patiently waited for me to turn around, get the camera and the big lens out and take a few shots before he flew off.

Koi
We had our class at the zoo yesterday. The assignment for the day was abstract, so I shot some abstract Koi.

Bald Eagle in Whittier
He (or she, I can't tell) was just hanging around the harbor in Whittier, showing off. He perched on this light for a bit, posing.

Well, this is a fine mess...
A lot of logs and other debris floats in the ocean at Seward, thanks to the high tides. These two appeared to have decided that it was easier to float than to fly, so they floated by us in the middle of the sound.

Denali Panorama
Denali Panorama
This is from the south viewpoint along hwy 3, in Denali State Park. It can be really difficult to portray the immensity of this mountain and the Alaska Range. Hopefully the panorama helps do that better.
This was taken on the way up to the park. There are a lot of little pull-offs to see the mountain, but this is by far the best, with a short hike up a hill to a magnificent view.

Us and Denali
Our whole family went to Alaska the week of 6/6 - 6/13. Lots of pictures, with lots still to process.

Canadian Rockies from 35K
We've just returned from Alaska, and this is the first shot I've finished editing. The time zone change is killing us, so I'll probably be a bit finishing up the rest. It was a great trip, and I'm looking forward to lots of photos.

Onexposure (1x.com)
There's a photography site that I've been checking out for a few months now, very arty and most of the photography is incredible. For some reason, I decided that I might belong with them so I posted a picture...and it got rejected. But, you get three spots (more if you get accepted) so I posted another one...and got published! Check it out: http://1x.com/v2/#photos/latest-additions/23807/

Some more new pictures

This was shot at The Bean; I think there was an earlier post about it. This is now my highest scoring shot on DPChallenge and you can buy a print of it there, if you like :)
The others are also recent challenge entries from that site. The Penny picture is a penny that Becky had from 1844. We checked to be sure it wasn't worth much, then she cleaned it up a bit and we worked for a long time to get a decent shot with a mirror to show both sides at once. Two pennies would have been a lot easier!
New uploads

Pam said that I didn't have very many words. I've usually posted pictures to this blog quickly, just so that people could see them. I should write a bit about them so you have some background.
The first one here is a tiger at the Como Park Zoo. Its a great little zoo in St. Paul. The good news about it is: its free. The bad news is: its free. It isn't nearly big enough to handle the number of people who want to go on the weekends. We try to go once in a while, but not a lot.
The flower is from my macro class that I took at the conservatory, which is attached to the zoo. 5 Saturday mornings in a row we got to set up our tripods and take macros of the flowers. Normally the conservatory doesn't allow tripods so it was a great opportunity. The second shot is of an Amaryllis and the last one is a Camellia that hasn't opened yet. The fifth shot here is also at the conservatory, showing drops of water that have collected on this tropical leaf. It was great to get inside and shoot flowers when there was a foot of snow on the ground, but going from extreme cold to hot and wet was a shock to the system.

Eagle Banking
Eagle Landing
Eagles Fighting
The eagle flying away had just caught a fish and landed on the ice to eat it when the other two flew over. The first eagle dropped his fish and flew off and the other two fought over who got to steal it!
