A picture of Becky from the Duluth Hawk Ridge.
Day 25 is a chickadee that was having breakfast while we were waiting for hawks.

The Duluth Bridge is at one of the entrances for the harbor, we watched a big ore carrier go under and just before the bridge went down, this sailboat scooted under as well.
Day 27 some grass by the Mississippi

Days 17 & 18

Pam came over for a conference last week so Saturday we went to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen and got some good pictures. The fall colors are at their peak right now, but the sun isn't cooperating with me.

This bumblebee wasn't at all concerned with us taking his picture, I think he would have sat on this flower all afternoon.

Days 14 & 15

A scene from Frontenac. Down by the river its very lush green and damp. Since we were there in October, it was really nice and comfortable, but I can imagine it gets pretty miserable in July!

We have couple hummingbird feeders on the deck, and we've had pretty good luck getting hummers in the yard the last couple of years. Earlier in the fall, we had some cool hummingbird wars. They may be small, but they don't know it.

Day 13 Tigers

I hang out at a site called dpchallenge.com. I submit some photography and I look at other people's photography and I read (and participate a very little bit) in their forums. They're currently running a side challenge where one person picks a month and year and somebody else submits a picture from then. I was all ready to submit this one for October 2003 when I discovered that it had actually been taken in September 2003 so it became day 13 instead.

Days 6 - 9

We're back, so here are pictures for days 6 - 9. We went to Frontenac State Park again and had a nice visit, lots of hiking, lots of sitting watching the lake, and lots of driving around looking for eagles, hawks and trains!
The first picture, for Day 6, was taken the evening of 10/2. It is a 10 minute, 51 second exposure, and the light tracks are trains and cars moving around the point. This is Maiden Rock with Lake Pepin in the foreground.

Day 7 is the same point during the following day. We spent several hours that afternoon lying in the sun and watching the barges and sailboats in the lake below.

Day 8: We drove south to Wabasha, then across the river to Alma, Wisconsin, hoping to see trains, barges or eagles. We did see eagles, but they were way too high in the sky to get more than black spots, even with my 500mm. What we did see was this, Lock and Dam number 4. There are 29 lock and dam systems between St. Paul, MN, and St. Louis, MO. This keeps the current lower and the vertical drop more in control to allow barge traffic up and down the river. This particular lock raised or lowered traffic about 9 feet, it may be that each lock's magic number is 9 feet? Who knows, it was cool watching the boats move in, drop 9 feet and then move out the other side. It made for some really boring photography so you get a cool photo of the dam instead!and Day 9: Here's a weird mushroom that Becky saw hiking around the bottom in the park.

Day 5

This is my entry in the latest challenge at dpchallenge.com. I started off thinking that I would do a tribute to Edward Weston. After reading about his work for a bit, and thinking about ways of emulating it, I decided I was in a bit over my head and chose this image instead.
We're going out of town on vacation for a couple of days, so if anybody is looking for these pictures, I'll post make-up pictures on Sunday :)
